This page is for general offroad information.  It was compiled for offroadracing.com.au (and you can still find a copy of it there) by Garry Myers.

Consider this: anyone can learn to ski. Go up the chair lift, come back down the slope; it’s always a bit of fun to go that little bit faster each time. Then you get the extreme guys who will charge down the side of a mountain on a double black diamond on a snowboard at a million miles an hour - just for the sheer thrill of it!

Anyone can race a car. Build a club car or a lap dash car and get out and circulate on your favourite track and see how you compare. Always a bit of fun. Then you’ll get the extreme guys who think it would be fun to race a car on a dirt track in the middle of the bush, half way out of control only to launch the thing off a 4 foot jump at speeds in excess of 100kph. Now that’s offroading!

Offroad racing is at the extreme edge of motorsport. Offroading is probably more akin to motor cross than normal racing. It can seriously test both the car and driver to the limit… and sometimes beyond.

Tracks range from sand, dirt, mud and gravel through dunes, forests, deserts and scrub. With 9 different divisions there is a type of car and a budget to quench any highflying thirst.

With wild jumps, creek crossings, hairpins and wide open straights, the racing is fast and furious with cars built to match. It’s amazing to see any vehicle looking like its trying to achieve launch velocity off a dirt jump with daylight beneath all 4 wheels!

Aside from the racing, the social side of the sport is just as appealing as the sport itself. With most events going over 2 days, Friday and Saturday nights are all about BBQs, sitting around a campfire with a beer or bourbon in hand and of course the never ending stories from all and sundry.
