(Click
here if you currently hold a rally license and wish to convert or upgrade to
an offroad license).
Pre-requisites
Every CAMS licensed driver or navigator in Australia must
be a member of an affiliated car club such as SORRA. SORRA club membership
is available for $35 per calendar year, or $50 for a family.
At least one member of every crew (ie driver or navigator) must be of at least
18yrs of age or hold a civil drivers license.
Notes: On some specific club only days a one weekend
club membership may be available for $10 - check with the organisors to make
sure. Juniors may be included on a family membership and will therefore
already be club members.
Licensing
Most people get the Level NO license as it allows you to drive
or navigate in any offroad event in Australia at the same cost as the O3N
license so we'll start with the Level NO license.
Level NO License
Step 1 - Club Membership.
Download and print the Club
Membership Application/Renewal, complete the form and forward it to the
address supplied on the form with the correct payment. You will then be
issued with a club membership card and membership number. Please note that
this is a PDF document, download the Acrobat Reader from here
if you don't already have it.
Step 2 - CAMS
application.
Download the Licence Application Form from the
CAMS website.
You will require both parts A & B to be completed and forwarded to the CAMS
address supplied on the form. If there are no problems with your
application you will be sent a Pre License Authority. Please note that
this is not licensing you to race yet, you must complete steps 3 & 4 below.
Step
3 - Off Road Lecture.
The off road lecture is based on the rules and regulations of the CAMS
manual, specifically the Offroad section. You can do the lecture online by
calling CAMS on 1300 653 529. There is a quick test involved based on the
material in the lecture. Please note that it is quite quick and simple,
I've not yet heard of anyone failing! The fact that you have passed the
lecture will be recorded by CAMS.
Step 4 - Observe
License Test.
The OLT can be held at Colo Park with SORRA, or at any event after arranging
it beforehand with the organisors. The OLT usually involves a shortened
section of the circuit where you will be observed for car control and
attitude. Again, it is quite quick and simple, and Ive not heard of anyone
failing. I suppose if you rolled half a dozen times you would
probably fail... You are now free to race, though there is some paperwork
that needs completing.
Step 5 - Finalising
Send your completed pre license authority to CAMS and a shiny new license will
be sent back to you. Note that for the first 2 events after completing the
OLT you will be required to race with P plates on the car.
Level NON
License
As per Level 03 above with the exception of step 4, the Observed
License Test.
Level NOJ License
As per Level 03 above.
Level NOJN
License
As per level 03 above with the exception of step 4, the
Observed License Test.
Level NOSNE
License
You MUST inform the event organisers at least 1 week in advance
(preferable 3 weeks) if a single event navigator will be in your car for an
event as the organisers need to secure paperwork from CAMS.
On
the day of the event the Level NOSNE form will need to be completed and if not already
a member, membership must be purchased. This entitles the holder to
navigate in an event up to and including state rounds, but NOT national
rounds. The $60 fee for the license may be used as a deposit if the holder
decides to purchase a full Level NO or Level NON license within 1 month of the event.
Converting
from Rally to Offroad License
A rally license can be converted or upgraded to level NO by contacting
the CAMS member hotline on 1300 653 529. The cost is $76 and you must
provide written proof of having competed in at least 2 rallys in the past 2
years. A renewal form must be forwarded to CAMS with the documentation and
a pre license will be granted. The Off Road Lecture must be completed
prior to your first offroad event.
This works both ways
so an offroader wishing to compete in Condo or Safari can have a rally upgrade
added to their license for the same price, though you will need to contact CAMS
on the number above to start the paperwork rolling.
If
you have any questions regarding licensing please contact the webmaster
or the CAMS member hotline.
